I have genuinely fantasized about doing this. Especially in terms of fan-remakes / fan-sequels of video games that I know would get sued into oblivion if I tried to release them normally. Just "leak" them somewhere and see if the Shareware model can still work in 2025.
anyone remember what time pirate bay started doing sponsored music? i vaguely remember having a fight star–or something–album that was advertised on the front page
watched an insane film called "The Man from Earth: Holocene" that premptively leaked itself to torrent sites with a message at the start asking you buy the dvd if you liked the film.
The film is insane. Its a sequel to Man from Earth, the premise is that a college professor is suddenly leaving town. His colleagues show up uninvited to throw him a party, and learn that he is thousands of years old, he is Jesus Christ.
The sequel picks up after hes moved to a new town, new idenity, new teaching job. His college students piece together the mystery. One student tortures him, trying to get him to deny that he is Jesus.
I remember this one at the time. They did that because the first film found popularity in online atheist circles, specifically due to being pirated through torrenting. So instead of getting mad at it, they embraced the only community that gave a shit about the film.
