I've started checking basically anything with a dial with a blacklight and follow up with the GMC. This is the first time I got a positive result for radium
So what’s the procedure when you buy something like this from a thrift shop? Do you let them know for the sake of anyone who might’ve spent a bunch of time around it/handling it or is that unlikely enough that mentioning it would just unduly worry them?
I usually show them but outside of opening the clock up and snorting the radium flakes or putting them in your coffee there's very little danger. The radiation is not detectable outside a 1 foot range and I can see all the flakes still in the clock.
Also 2.67μSv/hr would be concerning as a background radiation level, this is very localized and still quite low. I wouldn't keep this on my nightstand next to my head, but I wouldn't worry unless you spent an entire week with this directly on my lap
