I think it's more like the fact that a cat's face seems to get a little squished when you pet it, even to people without that illness. Then the cat does it to you. 🙂
This and the thing people do when they clap dogs violently on the head, back, looking on fondly as the dog flinches in discomfort and bewilderment. Why do people do this?
My grandpa used to do that with my German Shepard I owned as a kid, but she'd always press closer to him and ask for more instead of shying away. I guess she was just built different. 😭
Pretty sure this is why people do it — a certain subset of dogs LOVE being casually manhandled and some people meet one or two of those and assume it’s all of them.
