I see you're working with a narrow, regime-specific definition of "authoritarian": My point was that "challenging laws and norms" in the abstract doesn’t inherently imply authoritarianism because it's ultimately a question of legitimacy.

Jared’s post was already regime-specific, noting what the shifting narratives aspect of authoritarianism allows this particular regime to do. As we are (or were) a nation with anti-authoritarian laws and norms, challenging those is, indeed, a necessary step. Won’t be true everywhere but is here.
