Doomsday was adapted from TSR's Buck Rogers XXVc TTRPG based on the AD&D ruleset with slight modifications for its sci-fi setting. Everything was confined to the Solar System with a new cast of villains and heroes. Mike Pondsmith, the TTRPG designer for Cyberpunk in the 80s, had also worked on this.

AD&D's crunch came to life in character creation but, unlike SSI's fantasy-focused Gold Box series, players could also select from a laundry list of skills that can aid characters in fighting better in zero-g or repair their ship after combat.

The same AD&D engine that drove SSI's Gold Box games like Pool of Radiance found life among the stars with Doomsday sharing the same general feel from its UI to the isometric, turn-based combat. Instead of battling dragons and goblins, players could go up against robots and mutants.

In keeping with its sci-fi and TTRPG roots, players could even board enemy starships in space and explore them as they would enemy strongholds on other planets. There were also skill checks for key moments and plenty of incentive to simply head out and see what the Solar System had to offer.

In 1991, EA published a port of Doomsday for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive as studios moved to grab a piece of the fast moving console market in the early 90s by bringing over PC titles. The port smoothly translated the PC controls and introduced a few new features like a short intro and added music!
