As Lenneth, players will seek out souls and then season them with battle experience and skills through a mix of action and turn-based combat while exploring the world's cities and the ruins in between. Puzzles also await and when solved, can yield boss battles and valuables further within.

Combat is turn-based but command execution feels more akin to an action RPG as you use combos to take advantage of special conditions (like launching enemies and juggling them in the air) that can ultimately spin up into special attacks awarding bonuses at the end of the fight.

In addition, before starting Lenneth's quest, players can pirck from three different difficulty levels. Selecting "Easy", for example, will award a ton of experience per fight (useful!) but one of the possible endings for the game won't be available! "Hard" is "not for enjoyment" but "a challenge!"

Investing points earned after leveling can unlock new skills or improve them, but human souls have traits that can also be enhanced to make them worthy enough to send off to Asgard meeting your quota for a Chapter adding to the many subtle nuances to Valkyrie Profile's gameplay.

There are only so many souls to find (and make ready) in each chapter and only so many actions you can take before that chapter ends adding to the challenge. Ending a chapter brings you to Freya who reports on your progress as well as that of those souls you sent over.

It's easily one of my favorites. The music is haunting, the graphics lend so much character to the gameplay, and pulling off a combo feels really satisfying. But the individual stories for each soul, as grim as they can get, do so much to really set it apart. Definitely worth a try if you have time!
