The game used extensive claymation techniques for its NPCs. Many conversations involved detailed animations while others were stills with voiced lines that have to be heard to be believed. Despite being rated "Ages 12 and Up", quite a bit of adult material was peppered throughout the game.

This was purely an adventure. Players traveled to different worlds and beamed down to locations that would help their quest, exploring each one (screen by screen) for the next clue. Combat involved mostly button mashing a punch button and thanks to the "Gift of the Cat", you had nine lives.

One of the best things about Laser Lords was the music that played every time you beamed back to your ship, a dose of synthesized 90s injected into your ears with every visit. There were a number of different sequences that would rotate through your journey from world to world.

Weirdly enough, the story of Laser Lords continued as recently as 2020 when two pieces from the game surfaced at Heritage Auctions -- the original claymation prop for Zendo (he aged pretty well!) and a wraparound cover painting by fantasy artist, Bob Eggleton.

This ad that ran in CGW in 1990 with a familiar face teased a "Futuristic role-playing adventure" but somewhere along the way to 1992, the decision was made to release it on the Philips CD-i as Laser Lords. Perhaps it ran out of nine lives and this was Spinnaker's way of finally letting it go.
