The twist behind FromSoftware's action RPG is that your actions are replaced by cards instead. As you progress, you'll collect new cards to add to a deck pool (for a max of 30) that your actions will randomly draw from in every encounter. And then there are a few more wrinkles...

Each card can only be used once per area and every fight will force you to spend them meaning it's possible to run out of cards leaving you helpless! Also, each area, once completed, can't be revisited (one tactic to avoid this is to abort and then restart the area to keep farming, er, fighting!).

New runestones found along the way will raise your level and there are also side quests to discover. A card shop is also available to buy new cards from or use experience points in to improve cards that are ready (each card also earn XP when it's used!). Chests in the wild can also hold cards!

Lost Kingdoms was generally well received by press critics such as those at EGM. In their August 2002 issue, they praised FromSoftware's particular use of card-battle mechanics as an unexpected and novel idea applied to an RPG giving it solid marks.

The deck building (and ability to capture monsters into cards!) added a neat tactical distraction to its battles. This, along with a two-player "head-to-head" dueling mode, left a unique impression on critics and RPG fans playing their best hand in FromSoftware's very unorthodox GameCube debut.
