Eternal Ring was a launch title for the PS2, first in Japan and then later for North America, as one of its first RPGs. The North American ad poked fun at a certain famous franchise, though critics like the Official US PlayStation Magazine's November, 2000 issue gave it a chilly reception.

Like their King's Field series, Eternal Ring was also first-person action romp...but more welcoming! There was no stamina to worry about and this time, magic was the focus. Though you can level up with experience, the biggest boosts (and powers) were from rings you crafted.

They definitely had a tendency to shuffle and experiment with different things as they went from game to game, or series to series. In Evergrace, as another example, they used a power gauge instead: at full power > best damage. But you could still attack, even at 0% (for terrible damage!).

Eternal Ring had a lot to explore but outside of its first-person perspective, did its best to step away from its King's Field cues. Combat features, like having a massive arsenal, was scaled down in favor of its ring system which inherited all of that detail instead.

With the right ingredients, players could craft a massive arsenal of rings fulfilling a variety of needs depending on their configuration. They can be crafted for attack, to summon, or even passively buff your attributes allowing your inner jeweler to shine and being one of the game's best features.

Though Eternal Ring felt welcoming to players in some ways, it could also be hard to look past its rough faults. As one of earliest RPGs on the PS2, like Evergrace, Eternal Ring is another interesting look at a FromSoftware trying to find its way on a new generation of hardware.
