I was unaware of this series when it was released. Upon learning of it recently it was quickly added to my back-log of must-play games.

Right now I am working my way through more obscure SSI games, but I'll eventually get to it...

Originally only in German, an English version was developed but was not officially released before Thalion's closure. But in 1998, a beta of the English version (v1.07) was eventually released on the web via the Thalion Webshrine where you can also check out other preserved pieces of their history.

Ambermoon's turn-based combat and grid tactics were little changed from its predecessor keeping it familiar to fans and simple enough for anyone to grasp. Even chests found along the way could be deadly. On the plus side, unlike the last game, players could now use more than one save slot!

Ambermoon had improvements like your character not being completely helpless (they could actually use real weapons at the start), an automap with fast travel, gridless movement like that in Origin's Ultima Underworld, and storing things in containers. Hoarding powers activate!

Like Amberstar, despite being relatively obscure outside of Europe, it still has diehard fans that keep its flame lit. A fan named Pyrdacor had even recreated the game in C# and made it playable on today's PCs.

Pyrdacor's port is a great way to experience the classic game on more modern hardware. Everything is pulled over from the epic intro, the classic look, and of course, Matthias Steinwachs' soundtrack. There is even an "Advanced" edition available offering new, fan made content expanding the game!

Jurie Horneman, the programmer for both Amberstar and Ambermoon, even found what remained of his source code. In his blog, he had noted how gratifying it was to see his work from 30 years ago, noting "Some of what I did I would still do the same way today, even if I wouldn't use 68000 anymore."
