I mean, yes they should invest in social housing etc regardless, idk why it must be tied to police funding?? Defund the military instead, it's much less useful? Any type of state wellfare only works with a functioning police anyways, as those in need cannot ensure their own justice.

Because despite huge funding, the current policing model is working poorly. Police are using a lot of their funding for weapons and toys like APCs which don’t fix the problems they have.

Police funding in the US is local and from the same bucket as social interventions. Military is federal and not

In my country, I am entirely in favour of defunding the military for the same reasons; wanna defend your country? Make it well educated and healthy! One of the reasons I left military service.

So there, from a local point of view, local education and social housing comes from the same fund police come out of; evidence suggests a lot more bang for buck in crime prevention by funding education/housing/health rather than police toys.

And I say police toys because the police have chosen to purchase weaponary and quasi-military equipment rather than improve training, despite falling crime rates in many/most areas. Which is to say, they can’t be trusted to make good decisions with their funding

Ergo, if you want to make improvements in crime, you need to take the money away from the police and make better decisions for them. Hence the slogan.

So crime prevention via community building. A cheaper and better way of doing it, with all sorts of ancillary benefits.

But the cops need training that focuses on de-escalation and problem solving, plus accountability. Give them the tools they actually need rather than the toys they want.

This new training can replace their existing training rather than be an additional cost.
