My parents believed that teachers and librarians were the professionals that they respected to do it. They would never tell a surgeon how to operate. My parents focused on teaching us manners

It's a proven fact that the most important thing you can do to ensure that your child is a good reader & successful in school is to read to them every day from the time they are tiny. It's OK, if they roam around & play with toys at first - they are still listening, but may not be ready to sit, yet

It also helps to have volunteers. When my kids were little, I used to spend time in their classrooms listening to individual students read aloud. Watching them gain confidence in their reading skills was priceless!

I totally agree with this. It is amazing how many schools in large school districts do not have active libraries. In all of Philadelphia, I am told that only six public schools have active libraries.

If schools dont have libraries, create one of your own at home. Also look for the little libraries in neighborhoods near you or create one for others to use. We have 3 in my neighborhood alone.

In #USA after #Project2025 kicks in and #USGovt cut backs happen, NO public schools in #USA will have libraries or librarians

Along with sports, art, music and any other non curricular program

As most of these are funded by #DeptEducation

I remember my middle school librarian. She gave me an awesome book, Sentenced to Prizim by Alan Dean Foster. It was my first real book and my bridge from comic books to hardcore sci-fi.

My Mom was an avid reader and turned her love of books into a career as an elementary school librarian. My adult daughter is now an avid reader. Libraries and librarians are essential.

My school used to take us on a half-day trip to the library once per month.
The first few trips covered how to behave in a library, find books etc.
It was fantastic, and based on recent trips to the library, in dire need of being brought back. My local library is essentially a playground now.

I just wish the schools spent more time actually allowing the kids to read books for pleasure. I volunteered in the school library and sadly, most of the time was spent doing something non-book related, with only the final moments choosing a book.

I agree. When I was a kid at Louisa May Alcott school in Denver, we had a library & a librarian where I discovered the mystery and wonder of flight. I also lived across the street from a Carnegie Library where I discovered SciFi & what folks thought living on Mars might be like. It was foundational.
