.....so why do people hate Banjo-Tooie again? this game just keeps getting better the more I replay it after all of these years, I think it's one of the best 3D platformers ever made

Its probably my all time favourite game, it absolutely astonished 9 year old me with just HOW much game there was, and how the levels linked to each other. and fps multiplayer!
People don't like the approach being complicated. They want to enter a level, do everything, leave, repeat. Kazooie didn't have many (if any) instances of things you needed to return for, but I... prefer the interconnected feel of tooie and the world themes are much more fun to me
Yeah it definitely feels like there’s more in a casual playthrough but iirc you learn the sneaker move in Gobi’s Valley which you need for the race with Boggy
Funny thing about this example; if you do Gobi's Valley before Freezeezy Peak, then you won't have the Beak Bomb, needed for entering some pyramids. So I think you were supposed to choose which world you wanted to do first, but you'd always have to backtrack regardless of choice.
Add to it, you actually see the enterance to Gobi's Valley before the room with Freezeezy Peak's enterance, so I can see why some players would do that one first, but the player is probably gonna remember they unlocked Freezeezy much sooner.
It runs like dookey on original hardware (not an issue if you play any other version), otherwise a masterclass in how to do a sequel. Biggest criticism is, from my understanding, that it's a tad too ambitious to complete. I love that tho ❤️
i didnt know ppl hated the game, i know some didnt like it as much as the first cus of alot of collectables, but it was no where near the amount of dislike it got that DK64 had gotten. it was a good rareware game
Everyone talks about how Tooie feels too big when you play it after Kazooie but I recently played Kazooie after Tooie and couldn't help but find it kind of boneless in comparison (still love it tho)
Banjo-Tooie is "what if DK64 was actually a good video game"
People always get on it for backtracking, but it's really not any worse than like, Super Metroid cause you're always coming back with a purpose other than "aw fuck I guess I need Chunky and the tag barrel's all the way over there"
Tooie's backtracking is "oooh, now I can do this thing that I saw earlier!" while DK64 is constantly running back and forth to make any progress.
But people kinda took backtracking as any kind to mean "bad" unless the game is named Metroid, Zelda or Castlevania, I guess.
It's the superior game as far as mechanics go and a truly good sequel, but the backtracking just suuuuuucks. Even with all the doors you open up. I also just like how I can pick up BK1 and just beat it in a night or two because it's so digestible.
It was non-linear back before that was a thing, plus some of the minigames were a bit tedious. What’s fun is you can see how stuff like jet force Gemini and Star Fox adventures were in conversation with it. OG bk had some non-linearity in it but it was largely a tight straight through platformer.
I've never been able to properly play it cause I never had a N64 and everytime I tried an emulator it'd crash. I love Banjo Kazooie so I am super excited to try Tooie FINALLY
I think a lot of people just prefer the first one for being a bit of a tighter experience and that kindve poisoned the perception of the game over time (cuz yknow how the internet love exaggerating lol)
The flow of BT was a mess. Bk was simpler as well, easier to enjoy the worlds. With that said, I don't think BT is bad, but anytime I have the itch to play one of these games-- it's always BK. Glitter gulch's music slaps though.
One complaint I heard was alot of backtracking but personally I got stuck near the end of the game after reaching Grunty Industries and then just got distracted by other things
I loved the game, but it’s definitely not as replayable as B-K, which is huge for me. B-T is a little too bloated, has a few really confusing levels, way too much “come back to complete this level via a secret passage in a later level” stuff. But overall it’s great.
Never got it either. Yes Grunty industries is rough at the first go around, and mary canary is satan incarnate but the game as a whole is fantastic for its time.
Lots of people don't like the backtracking, but I love the interconnectedness of the levels, and the backtracking is like a metroidvania thing of unlocking new abilities and then going back to use them.
the backtracking in tooie wasn't innately bad, but it did a fairly crap job communicating when a level's task couldn't be done until later in the game and that often led to players smacking their head against a wall trying to figure out currently impossible puzzles
I think primarily because they streamlined stuff like removed the health reaction faces and the jiggy dances, which is weak to base your argument off of solely, but also they don't like how big and interconnected the worlds are, which is an opinion.
I've tried several times in my life to enjoy it and I just don't. It's too long and complicated to sum up in one post but the short version is it just feels too bloated to me, with worlds that feel huge for the sake of making them huge. I just don't enjoy myself playing Tooie compared to Kazooie.
I don't hate Banjo-Tooie, I simply don't like it nearly as much as Banjo-Kazooie. The worlds are too big and it takes too long to do anything. Plus all the backtracking. I want to finish a world on my first visit.
I've done 100% many times, but I never liked B-K much either.
I LOVE Tooie! Getting dragon Kazooie was always so awesome to me. And always loved the Witchyworld level. Played it sooo much as a kid and have revisted it as an adult: I still really enjoy it.
I'm not a BK person but the ppl who are and yet single out BT or DK64 as bad confuse me. "too many collectibles?" what's the crime, being too much of the thing you like? ???
Saying they're BAD is just the internet exaggerating things. Whats annoying in DK64 is how EVERYTHING is character specific and they'll do things like put Coloured bananas for one character in an area you need to open with another character. Its not game ruining but it does get annoying.
That doesn't make it immune to criticism.
It's clearly just a way to pad out game length and doesn't really offer any interesting challenges other than ''Come back with the other monkey''.
It's optional, but still tedious.
No I don't think it is immune to criticism, I get what you mean, but I liked having each character have their own set of collectibles, made you use everyone
That's reasonable.
I think there are far better character specific challenges in the game though that don't feel like the devs trying to waste my time.
You still need a fair bit of them and theres quite a few bananas behind areas opened by other monkeys, forcing you to switch or needing to backtrack later. Its not game ruining, but the game does it enough times that it does get annoying. Incentive to switch is one thing but it was a tad excessive
yeah, which plays into like, it's not all that overbearing but ppl blew it out of proportion. imo any gulf in quality btwn any of these games is largely fabricated from hearsay. I think we all agree on that here.

Honestly, I kinda prefer Tooie. There's a lot of world building where you took all the characters from the first game and followed up with them.
Personally I don't hate, but I don't have great memories with the game either 😂 The rage quits 🥲

Everything makes noise, and the soundtrack is very busy, for me it feels like BT was more intense than BK in both areas. It's just not for me anymore.
It's a tad too big. All the backtracking gets obnoxious. I should not have to travel to 3 different worlds to get a single Jiggy
I still think it's good, it just does a tad too much
