Some countries still naively believe that they will be able to separate Assad from Iran - it will not happen. However, naivety is also reflected in media coverage.

The footage from the ground is telling. In every town and village through which rebels pass, Iranian structures are visible. In the offices of the municipalities and party buildings of the ruling Baath Party, one sees Iranian flags, the symbolism of Khomeinism, and so on.

In short, we are talking about de facto occupation structures that are making decisions even at the local level, and clearly, the Assad regime has not had a say on a lot of issues.
