Not quite as good as the anecdote about the time @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com had to call up when 'Anansi Boys' took a really dark turn in an elevator and the entire end of the book had to be changed.
Sometimes things don't work out the way you plan. Just roll with it, and enjoy where you end up.
I'll file that next to the actor who had to be repeatedly talked out of his trailer because he was scared he couldn't do it, because who'd ever believe him as a charismatic, charming guy?
The "Sandman" kind of serialized fiction MUST be especially nerve wrecking though - the beginning of the story has already been published, so there's no way you can go back and fix things.
