NIMBYs will fight tooth and nail against ANY zoning change to allow new housing, no matter how little it will change existing neighborhood look and feel; so advocates should just ask for what they actually want.

But my hot take is that ADUs are too much of an olive branch to NIMBYs and don’t do much to alleviate the housing shortage. I kinda don’t like the way advocates say “gentle”, as if something like a 5 over one is “harsh”.
But, the way it’s framed sometimes gives a little too much credence to the NIMBY worldview
And a strong ADU policy can do a lot. Seattle’s ADU laws allow for home + AADU + DADU in “single family” zones. Then you can condo-ize the lot and sell each home individually.
Home 1: $1 mil
1,650 sqft, 3 bd/2 ba, 1 parking spot
Home 2: $663k
1,075 sqft, 2 bd/2 ba, no parking
Home 3: $723k
1,075 sqft, 2 bd/2 ba, 1 parking spot
Not cheap but a single-detached on the next block is listed at $2 million.
