My sister’s name is difficult for some to pronounce so in kindergarten she asked her teacher & classmates to call her by a nickname. She didn’t think about telling my parents this & they were surprised at the first parent-teacher conference, but NO HARM WAS DONE & we all still often call her Sunny!

In a misguided attempt to seem cool in high school, I started going by the name Tommy. Nobody threw a fit of any kind, and every one of my teachers went along with my request for all four years of high school. Everyone would’ve thought it insane if those teachers had been fired over it.

Even my youngest son’s teachers went along with his name change before we went to the trouble of having it legally changed. Granted, we were supporting the change as parents, but teachers followed my kid’s wishes even before we got directly involved in order to get his school email, etc. changed.

Kids have been called by what we referred to as nicknames and never had a problem for years.
