Because its the nuclear option for foreign investment. Nobody risks putting their money in your country if there is a chance it can be taken by political whim. It's really not a precedent a government wants to set. Even for the best of reasons.

I think Trump doesn't care about borders. His upbringing is so wealthy he probably has more loyalty to hotel chains where he lives than he does countries he happens to be in.
