This is also what's happening in the UK. The once left-leaning Labour Party with an enormous majority in Parliament, have simply adopted Tory Party policy. They are offering olive branches and appeasement, rather than alternatives and opposition, to the absolute worst of people on the extreme right.

1) The (implicit) assumption in your statement that voters want politicians to stand for what they believe in is based on that voters are rational and choose based on a campaign or ideas of the candidate. Most voters are irrational (or low-info, a more modern term). The best evidence of this are...

2)...predictive models that use a few economic vars and pres. approval rating about three months before the election. This is a very accurate way to predict presidential elections. This year, a model by Peter Enns at Cornell predicted w/zero errors Trump's winning % and all 7 seven states.

3) This is only possible if voters are inherently irrational. Formally, the effect of a candidate's campaign can be found, using a successful predictive model as a control, of how much influence it had. Most models estimate this to be about 1%. Andrew Gelman has a recent blog post about this.

I'm sympathetic, but unconvinced. It's time to stop blaming the Ds and giving voters undeserved credit. This is about ignorance. A stunning percentage of the American electorate is politically, scientifically and philosophically uninformed and incapable of reasoning beyond reactive fear and bigotry.

Biden up the IRS to take on rich people, he took on junk fees, brought back manufacturing, invested in public transportation, helped make meds more accessible, took on price gouging, etc etc etc, YET NO ONE FUCKING TALKS ABOUT ALL OF THAT EVER. At the national level, the Democratic Party is much more interested in conserving power and resisting change than in representing their constituents. This model results in inherently conservative and anti-populist politicking and campaigning.
