Believing that America can or must be good does not require one to believe that America is or was good or that Americans are more important than anyone else in the world. I don't know who it serves to insist otherwise.

This is getting fewer headlines than it should. After coming to power promising to help working people, the president is revealing his real priorities by actively making it easier for banks to rip people off.

anyone who writes about or talks about the ongoing impact of racism in the united states is accused of a "victim mentality," but this here is the actual victim mentality

Four people close to Hegseth, including his three top aides, have all fallen in his search for who is leaking embarrassing information about him. It looks like *everybody* is! Because he’s a buffoon! www.politico.com/news/2025/04...

gonna talk to an artist friend about maybe designing this. stay tuned.

thinking of becoming a full on pocket constitution guy

This framing of "dependence" is fucking propaganda. The whole point of the federal government is to build and maintain national institutions that promote public health, education, scientific advancement, etc. The implication here is that those functions are a matter of private not public concern.

"At Michigan, students have been told the casualties include orientation events for new Latino, Arab and Asian American students, along with the LEAD Scholars program, a financial aid award for Black, Latino and Native American students." These things harm no one. He just wants nonwhite suffering.

Van Hollen details why he thinks the government of El Salvador is making a huge mistake in turning itself into a concentration camp for Trump

This is an obvious point, but cannot overstated. There is an enormous difference between deporting someone - where they get off a plane as a free citizen in their home country AND FUNNELING THEM INTO A BRUTAL PRISON FROM WHICH THEY HAVE NO CHANCE OF EVER EMERGING!!!

going to be on @chrislhayes.bsky.social show soon!

fun historical fact: among the core political forces in the development of mass incarceration was the "Victims' Rights Movement". Its first major legislative national legislative victory was under President Reagan. The prison population doubled under his administration.

definitive evidence that trump hates this dude

it is crazy to me that we have pundits, pollsters and democratic strategists staring directly at trump diving head first in a quagmire of a scandal and insisting that it is bad politics to make hay of it

Not sure who needs to hear this, but any govt official who violates someone's constitutional rights -- and is acting outside the scope of their lawful authority -- can be PERSONALLY liable in a civil suit. ICE officers. Cabinet members. White House staffers. Even the president.

We on the left supposedly look down on Trump voters, but nobody has more disdain for Trump voters than Trump. He hates them and supports policies that will make their lives more difficult.

Really crucial analysis of the Trump-Bukele prison deal. Seems like there’s a lot of dangerous corruption lurking just under the surface.

Hans Noel calls political thinkers who historically set party agendas “coalition merchants.” Yglesias is one of our era’s top coalition merchants. And he has helped turn the Democratic Party into a reactive party that plays possum like Schumer and says “the fascists have a point” like Newsom.

the fundamental problem with these people (not jonathan) is that they don’t seem to believe in anything. if you’re willing to sacrifice one of the foundational rights of constitutional government on the altar of “buh this might not be popular” then what won’t you sacrifice?

and there is more of this for democrats to do! demand to see the other people renditioned to this prison! conduct on camera interviews with people who have lost social security, veterans benefits and medical care because of DOGE, hold rallies against the administration’s lawlessness!

Many Democrats fear having power because they know that power gives them responsibility to act, but they also fear giving up power because they know their base will be angry, so they set up fake fights that they know they will lose, like the supposed budget bill standoff.

people asking “why can’t they do both?” and the answer: on tariffs/the economy the plan is to do nothing and make posts about egg prices. whereas on immigration, as von hollen has shown, there’s space to act. and really what the “it’s a distraction” camps wants is to not act

A direct strike on her home.

So here’s the thing. Do what he says. Look at “the details of it, the signings of it.” Meaning the Citizenship Clause. You will see that it is not just about slavery. You will see Reconstruction Republicans saying again and again than the children of foreign nationals are birthright citizens.

"Today’s builders of Babel tell us that there is no room for losers, and that those who fall along the way are losers. Theirs is the construction site of hell." [Pope Francis, 18 April 2025]

Update: 96-year-old’s bank account was cleaned out by Social Security on the grounds that he had been dead for a while and they were reclaiming benefits SS had paid to the allegedly but not actually dead man. He now has no money. DOGE strikes again. Anybody know a lawyer for this?
