This was an NPC, but he was a dragonslayer with a storied name, known to be an elite warrior who was dependable...but over the three sessions he was with us in combat, he hit precisely ONCE

I had to make a character mid way through a campaign because my first character got petrified. I made an Astral Elf Graviturgy Wizard whose previous job before meeting the party was going to different planes and destroying creatures that consume magic. She’s so lovable that the OP backstory is fine.

Her dynamic with the Bloodhunter in our party is really fun, because she has the Astral Drifter background so she’s had run-ins with various deities and the Bloodhunter is very religious, so her talking about them so flippantly messes with his head.

Last campaign, we had a fighter who slew a kraken at lvl 5. He almost died, and the woman who treated him became his love interest even before the campaign started. By the end of the campaign, they were married and had a daughter.

I liked that, and it showed his potential for strength.

I would probably take it a comedic route. Yes, the character killed the dragon but they never meant to. They were doing something else completely unrelated a ways off and accidentally set off a Rube-Goldberg sequence of events that killed the dragon. They actually feel kinda bad about it.
