We’re lefty, but both my kids have been the ones who raise and lower the flag at school. My 11yo daughter loves to point out the flag code violations at all the maga houses in our neighborhood. I want them to feel patriotic without being weird about it.

your daughter is me when I was a kid. I was super into flag etiquette as a little girl scout and I STILL smugly look at performative patriotic MAGA flag displays and judge the violations. It means I also know that burning the flag is a valid form of protest because of all the associated symbolism.

I always think of the specific context of protesters draped in the flag getting beat up by police. It makes the police look way worse when they beat you up.

We have brought our American flag to Pride and to the BLM march here, because it freaks the fascists out to see it flying with the progressives.

And my military family members (who are mostly progressives) don't need to see the flag only flown by fascists.
