More than 21 million American adults lack easy access to a passport or birth certificate. Requiring these documents to register to vote could disenfranchise millions of eligible Americans — which, of course, is the GOP’s intent.

So they plan to exploit a weakness in our documentation system. Wouldn’t the rational response be to fix that problem, not use it as a reason to defeat the bill?
Then some other means if Proof of Citizenship is required 🙄. Passports are easy to get. Birth certificates too - both just take a bit of time. Nothing wrong with that.
I'm still pissed that many didn't even try voting in the last election. Fall into this category and didn't vote, why should we be fighting for you? But we will.
And lack of birth certificate or passport may soon find you on a plane to El Salvador. Why, again, didn't you vote?
It's getting harder every day to watch the complete capitulation & self destruction of the party & leaders in particular. I do NOT understand WHY they are meek WEAK COWARDS voting FOR Trump appointees & STILL trying to work w R's!! It's MADDENING! There's got to be a change soon or it'll explode!?!
One thing is the Biden administration deported more immigrants that the Trump first term and they let Trump convince Americans that he did and run with it. Unforgivable
Well that was totally on my bingo card I didn’t expect to be able to vote ever again in my life after this election and no one listened to me when I said that was possibility
Ds should be doing outreach in these communities to help them obtain the documents needed. We have 2 years to help them. How do we find/contact them to provide assistance.
When I moved to Mi from a different state I went to get a new drivers license. I took old license from other state, birth certificate, bill with name on it, soc sec card, proof of car insurance and registration and it still wasn’t enough. They made me come back with my marriage license.
You'd need a birth certificate for the passport anyway.
Your birth certificate is proof of citizenship. And your driver's license is proof of identity.
I am not carrying those things around. You only need them once for voter registration.
Voter registration doesn't expire, unless you don't vote for many years and they think that you've moved away or are dead. Then some states require you to prove that you're still alive and still live there.
But you can take a good picture of your passport page and save it to your phone in a secure passport app. That's at least prima facie evidence of your citizenship.
Or you could save it to a protected cloud storage.
That's a whole different story. It's pure harassment. And with their "quotas" they don't care if they're right or wrong, only that they get their numbers.
I was only talking about voter registration along the topic of the article.
I am lucky in that I'm German and look like a Trumpian American.
Yeah,I think you're right.
I even have the enhanced ID, but I always bring my complete documentation to apply for such ID documents, so I don't even know what was needed.
and get a copy of my marriage certificate or divorce decree to prove my name change, then provide a utility bill in my name which was impossible as I was then living with a relative.
Keep in mind that I had at the time an unexpired MD driver’s license and a Social Security card.
as I never found them), two days of missed day of work without pay including one driving to the MD courthouse, then having to bring my niece to PennDOT to swear that I lived with her.
And if your birth certificate is in your maiden name, you need a marriage license. It took me a week to find it to renew my driver's license. Keep your name (I hope most people do that now).
So, why not have a non-profit that pays for ppl to get passports? Conduct cert searches, manage the process, and get it done. This is an opportunity for wealthy progressives and independents to help NOW.
Everybody (especially idiots who come up with so called "common sense" plans) should be required to work a few shifts with their local election offices. A few hours in any office in the country and I'm pretty sure this insane paranoia about illegal or duplicate voting would cease.
And this problem is mostly limited to people "born and bred" in the US.
Immigrants like me who have been naturalized all have a certificate of citizenship and typically even a passport. We immigrants can vote.
@joncooper-us.bsky.social have you seen this? I’ve seen KC and Eggroll post this! Trying to spread the word regarding Nevada’s election fraud investigation: https://youtu.be/x_931HTdtBw?si=fi_gvM8bikcjDrWw
Ok this is all sorts of weird (for my euro trash brain).
Birth certificates are universal, but have no picture id. Passports have a pic, but some people don’t have/need one.
Drivers licenses (as i understand) can be easily forged, so they’re out.
We have 4 years to organize a drive to get as many adults registered as we can.
4 years.
State Democratic parties should start doing this now.
I’d tag the Iowa Democratic Party but they’re not on BlueSky.
Where is the Iowa Democratic Party?
Zero sympathy from me. In Europe we all have our IDs on hand, no exception. This is YOUR fault for not having a unified national ID system. Americans scream "mUh fReEdOmS" like dumb fucking idiots whenever this is pointed out to them. Oh and we also vote on paper and count in one night.
In Michigan, they make you prove you aren't an immigrant to get a driver license or state ID.
They quiz you off your birth certificate.
My severely autistic adult child was quizzed... poor her in a melt down.
Passports should be issued free of charge or at least for the cost of a copy of a birth certificate. If they want to demand people prove citizenship then issue passports. The current cost for a passport is $165 for first time applicants.
Yup, all part of their plan.
I know plenty of folks w/o passports who also don't know where their birth certificate is.
As many folks as didn't vote when it mattered in 2024 (and before), I can't imagine how many fewer when they 1st need to spend a whole day figuring out some expensive docs.. smdh.
Tackle it with an initiative to get all Americans a secure identity document, at no charge. If not by the feds, then it could be executed on a state level.
Sadly, called it. While trans people don't make a large portion of the electorate, this, in combination with the gender requirements, will probably disenfranchise all of us unless we are willing to carry inaccurate and matching identification.
I agree. Make voting day a legal holiday, increase the number of polling places, and require every citizen to cast a ballot. Even if people vote NON OF THE ABOVE, at least they are a party of the process.
Government are required to have available the forms for the application for passport Driving licence. Certificate for working in the Electricity and domestic Gas supply.

Strange, is it not. That in the 1st world when children become adult at 18. They are actively encouraged to Register on the voting register.
There are more passport holders in the EU27 than in the Continental United States. Schengen area don't require a passport but do hold one just incase.

Well it works both ways. It will disenfranchise Republicans as well. I just wonder if every US citizen would have to reregister. Folks, start getting your birth certificates, marriage licenses and current social security card now before the rrush.
These are already required to register to vote, to show you are a citizen. Which is how we build the voter lists, which is what is checked when you appear in person to vote.
They could never legitimately win elections that’s the point. Most of America knows they are stealing us blind and their policies only benefit themselves and their friends.
The voter ID thing disproportionately hampers those who would vote against Conservatives.
The RW tories of Boris Johnson did it here in the UK and the socialist vote dropped by some 15%
AMERIKA ERWACHE!
It's really the only reason they're still in power. They suck so bad, they needed Rush and Fox to push their bullshit, and then block voters and gerrymandering. Started with Nixon
How fucking dare they strip the rights of legally registered voters. Oh, that's right, nobody is willing to do what it will now take to save democracy in the US. I have never been so ashamed to be American. Allowing an illegitimate administration to repeatedly defile the constitution is abhorrent!
Imagine a political philosophy in a country FEATURING democratic self-government where STOPPING PEOPLE from participating is the only way you can succeed.
Why would anyone want this (except the Grifter Class which is funding it)?
Would this not hurt the MAGA as much as the Dems? If anything I would think Dems have more passports. I mean Im against it, but confused who they are trying to harm.
People wonder why Tennessee has had a super GOP for over a decade. They disenfranchise voters, gerrymander the hell out of the state, and make sure specific populations can’t vote.
As a Swede it came as a total surprise to me that you don’t have to ID yourself when voting 🤔 Is it that expensive with ID’s/Passports in the US? In Sweden it’s like $40 and it expires after 5 years.
In some states, it is difficult to get to the DMV or a passport office due. States like Alabama, closed down numerous locations to hurt those that can’t afford to travel long distances to get and ID. If they want everyone to have an ID, they need to make it free and easily accessible.
One thing we can do if it passes, is make a massive effort to help people get their birth certificates and, in the case of name changes, the documentation required to prove their identities (ex. marriage certificates). Financial assistance may be needed for some, and that could be set up.
Yep. Republicans know that older, wealthy and white Americans are more likely to have access to these forms of identification or a way to easily get them. They also know who votes for them. They have cheated their way to complete control of our government by disenfranchising Dems.
The GOP will be sued if this passes and Trump signs it into law - that's our fair warning.
At least the Dems in the Senate can filibuster it if it makes it to the Senate as it needs 60 votes. Hopefully, the Senate GOP won't change the rules to go nuclear or make changes to the filibuster...
I don't know maybe it's cuz I'm old, but I can remember the absolute pride of knowing that just being able to say, I am a US citizen. Was sufficient to prove that I was.
Then, since the Patriot Act, which was created because some legal residents, taking flight lessons in the US flew planes into a building. That's no longer enough
Someone who is unhoused/homeless or in desolate poverty has the right to vote as a citizen.
How are they going to afford to pay for a certified copy of their birth certificate. If they can't go to the office do they have a 'shipping' option? (costs $ added fees). It's a piece of paper-not durable.

Oddly, those illegal voter’s might have voted for Trump. Not enough people seemed to have grasped what was at stake.
That's what MAGAs were telling us when there are Democrats in the White House
