The exhibition is described as, "A majestic glimpse into the beauty of Indigenous dancers in all their regalia. A tradition re-imagined through the eyes and lens of Bryan Helm." But do we need white men re-imagining our traditions?

As someone who is both Anishinaabe and a photographer, I am cautious of the photos I take at pow wows and would never profit without the knowledge and consent of the the dancers.

I am disappointed that this type of thing is still happening, and goes against the current efforts of reconciliation. Let alone how hard it is for Indigenous photographers to get exhibitions when we try and showcase our own cultures.

I'm a strong believer in the idea of for us, by us. There are many talented Indigenous photographers capturing our own peoples and telling our own stories after decades of non-Indigenous people creating the representations (usually inaccurate) of Indigenous people.

And that’s not to say I am against non-Indigenous photographers photographing Indigenous people but it needs to be done in an ethical way with good intentions that include consent without the end goal being to profit.
