Notice how in the entire run of The Handmaid's Tale, it is never specifically said that Gilead is Christian and Jesus is never mentioned. The show even has a strong evangelical fan base.

I'd noticed the same thing but drew the opposite conclusion: that the ideology of Gilead had intentionally rejected - and banned - the New Testament framings of redemptive forgiveness and love, in favour of Levitical restriction, vengeance and punishment. Theistic but intentionally not Christian.
... If you think the difference between Christianity and a fascist vengeance cult is the New Testament, I wonder what your Jewish friends think. Or should I say "Levitical"
Sorry to be unclear, I do not think that - rather that it was a choice by the showrunners to indicate that the Gilead movement think this. By Levitical I was referring to the 'eye for an eye' punishments which specifically play out in the show (I now see that was Exodus, oops)
That's just untrue, the leaders of Gilead reference the Bible many times and it's explicitly the basis for their repressive government. This is what they did to the Washington monument!
This is honestly bizarre - is the idea to avoid offending Christians? As a Christian I’m very much not offended by the idea of a fascist theocracy being Christian, that would be par for the course historically.
