I do find the idea that regression to the mean (what some people call thermostatic - each election always throws out the incumbent) is the most powerful force in modern politics to be both convincing and terrifying. If that’s so then the USA cannot be fixed in my lifetime.

Having just watched Flow, and having unconsciously gendered all the characters based on zero information, I am saddened to see that my judgements were all completely wrong.

“This politicization of US science … will, if left unchecked, create a vacuum to be filled with junk science, insider dealing, junk discoveries [and] wasted spending”. Joshua Weitz speaks up. 🧪 joshuasweitz.substack.com/p/whats-goin...

There has never been and never will be a birthrate induced shortage of human beings on this planet. There are many reasons one might want children, as I do. It is simply not the case that anyone in particular has a responsibility to consider having children to perpetuate the existence of humanity.

And now I am at the library and I went to the front desk to get some help looking up a very specific list of books and she just... pulled up... ChatGPT?!!?? a) I could have done that myself if it wasn't my enemy and b) ALL SIX BOOKS IT SUGGESTED WERE WRONG

“Because they knew: a return to the rule of law was a rejection of Brexit. It was a rejection of Rwanda. It was a rejection of the entire populist worldview. They understood, even if many liberals didn't, where the battle against populism was taking place.”

Absolutely brutal

Welp, got an answer to this question: Apparently the answer is no tariffs are being collected. Trump broke the system www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/c...

“Like the French monarchy, Trump can wage war on smuggling. But does the U.S. really have the capacity to enforce these tariffs? And can they still rely on allies — many of whom have also been hit with tariffs — to help?”

The first step in policy analysis is figuring out what's going wrong. And by my view, we're facing two crises: A tariff crisis, and a crisis of confidence built upon fears incompetence. Let me lay it out, wonk it out and math it out. (I get a bit testy because I think this stuff really matters.)

Spot on.

Georgetown scholar Dr. Khan Suri, who was abducted by ICE, was refused food/water to break Ramadan fast, housed in a room without a bed, and issued *used* underwear. His child cried for days after he was taken and has since stopped speaking. ccrjustice.org/home/press-c...

Just listening to this - it’s wild how her politics are almost entirely based on her identity and lived experience, but she hates identity politics. The only correct way to see the world is her way.

Gotta admit, that does look pretty great.

Exactly. We’re here because US business leaders and voters valued acting like arseholes over economic and political sanity.

Kozak Ukrainian Eatery is more than a successful small business — it’s a pillar of the community here in New Westminster. Thanks to the staff for the warm welcome, and the pastries for the road. #SlavaUkraini

Europe isn’t very fond of your cars either.

Exactly, it’s more about wages and employment rights, however you get them.
