Wages have not been stagnant for 50 years. Both wages and benefits have grown and outpaced inflation.

Memes can be a problem when they oversimplify complex systems. Having said that sometimes politics requires oversimplification.

Wages were stagnant if you looked at right before the early 80's recession and stopped at the bottom of the Great Recession. There were ups and downs within that period, but the overall growth was flat. People committed talking about that to memory around that time and then refused to update.

From about 1979 to the beginning of the pandemic. However, we are probably about to see a massive decline in wages as a very deliberate policy by Trump's backers who are willing to risk a depression in order to break the backs of workers.

There's a more complicated picture in that period since there were massive improvements in technology shifting what sort of standard of living comparatively similar wages can purchase, but the overall picture of flat real gains and growing inequality was at least fundamentally correct.
