All these exams should be abolished. They're sexist, racist and they do not work.

(It would also help if the Colleges had anything approaching minimal managerial competence.)

Other than ‘because that’s how it’s always been done’, why has the push to move away from single-episode minimal competency assessment been so muted here? Seems like it’s something that should be easy to get rid of in the face of *checks notes* most other systems moving to cont. portfolio evaluation

Portfolio assessment has major problems too, and I don’t think getting rid of exams is the answer. Just make the exam system better.

I don’t totally disagree. However, I think there’s a lot of utility in using a plurality of assessment forms. There’s a fairly strong evidence base iirc for mixed methods of assessment (eg, knowledge-based exams, situational observation assessments, skills assessments etc.).

I also recognise that my comparison to other systems is problematic. people look at US/CA residency-style assessment as a panacea, not recognising a lot of the knowledge delivery for us happens much later in our careers. Their single episode exams that test the same content just happen earlier.

There is already a plurality of assessment. ARCP requires huge amounts of portfolio assessment every year.
