Theoretically, any party could have total control but pretty hard with an open primary. Everyone running is on the list. Each voter picks one. Top four to the general. First time we had something like 40 candidates for congress when Don Young died

These are not open primaries, these are 1st rounds that winnow candidates, there is no primary. It also has nothing to do with RCV, it's 2 systems mashed together and it's frankly bizarre.

I really wish every state did it. MAGA is against it so that tells you something. But you rank the votes. 1. 2. 3. etc. Then, you do another vote and vote for top 2. If third party is a spoiler like usual, they won't make it to the top 2 usually. It makes every vote count.

More likely to accurately represent the preferences of voters when there are more than 2 viable candidates (the Condorcet winner - the candidate that would beat any other in a head-to-head contest - tends to be the RCV winner although it is not guaranteed).

What if you have multiples from one party running? Let's say you had two Dems and a Republican wouldn't there be risk that the Republican wouldn't have a chance to win?

In most cases, the final two would end up as the Republican and one of the Democrat candidates, and then it's just a straight fight for which candidate is preferred by more of the electorate. If anything, leakage helps the Republican here (votes for the excluded D that didn't give a 2nd pref). (1/3)

For that not to happen (the Republican eliminated in third place), the Democrats would need to have 65+% of the vote between them AND for the vote to be split very evenly between them. With a vote that lopsided, it's hard to argue a Republican should have won! (2/3)

The 'no' grew lead from 45 to 664 votes today after massively carrying the final batch of results. Those were largely from the rural areas with large Native populations.

I like this but unless at least half the country is doing this, it could lead to a wasted third party vote.

We need a commitment to use it when enough states commit. Until then it hurts the voting system by diverting the party favorites.

Alaska and Utah are probably the "weirdest" lean red states whereas Vermont and Oregon are probably the "weirdest" lean blue states - the weirdness of Vermont starting by them having Repubs in statewide office while solid D for president
