We watch low budget horror movies (once the kids are in bed) We have despiser this year. It's fun tracking the dvds down, and we have quite an incredible collection 👍 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349345/?ref_=fn_all_ttl_1
Ey. But my inlaws are in Varkaus. A bit over 21 years ago I met a young doctoral student in Helsinki. It was unexpected. An accident. 16 & a 1/2 years ago we got married. 2 years shacking up in Canada together... 4 in Austria post wedding. Now we live in the state you can't pronounce. Massacusetts.
This is one of my favorites! PBS TV used to show it here in New England, USA but when they stopped airing it I bought the DVD. My daughter and granddaughter love it, too.
My favorite! I watched it with my children! This year I shall watch it with my grown children and young grandchildren. The music is so hauntingly beautiful 🎄😭❤️🎶Just love everything about it.
Well later we will watch Rare Exports. We often watch The Family Stone, The Holiday, Christmas In Connecticut, Joyeux Noelle, A Christmas Carol, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas the original version, Christmas In The Clouds.... There are a bunch we watch.
Home Alone 1/2/3, How the Grinch Stole Christmas (animated or live action version), The Santa Clause 1/2/3, A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Elf, umpteen Disney Christmas specials...
Home Alone series,
Elf, Santa Clause series with Tim Allen, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, Scrooge, Miracle on 34th Street, Little Drummer Boy, Rudolf the Rednose Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman
Great question. I do feel there is a bias towards Western movies but there are a few great choices from around the world.

There’s an ongoing debate in my boyfriend’s fam about whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie. We lead the “obviously” team and his sister says “no.” One year it made her cry (she’s 27). Last week we found out SHE’S NEVER SEEN THE MOVIE.
In Germany “Three Wishes for Cinderella“ and “Little Lord Fauntelroy“ are classics. Also the Sissi movies are on every year around Christmas. And “Dinner For One“ is shown every year on New Year’s Eve.
In my realm, no such tradition lingers. Mortals here have long distilled their essence into a trinity of traits: the fear of standing alone, the comfort of servitude, and the gravity of the herd. What remains are echoes-movies chosen by scattered tribes, seeking meaning in the void.
My tribe's list:
Great question! I’m
In the USA and although I’m
usually not around my family for Christmas . Home Alone is a great
one for me. I also really like the Preacher’s Wife.
Our family movies: Home Alone, Home Alone 2, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (this is always on when the Christmas tree gets put up), How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Polar Express, The Grinch, Frosty the Snowman.
Gremlins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Die Hard, Muphets Christmas Carol, original Christmas Carol, Trading Places, Ben Hur if its on, Hook, Christmas Lights, Clash of the Santas. Reindeer Can Fly.
country? Idk. my families?
the lord of the rings, it's a wonderful life, older animated movies (the life and adventures of Santa Claus, annabelle's wish, etc), how the grinch stole christmas
I liked Fat Man with Mel Gibson. Not a feel good movie, but it tells a Christmas story relevant to our dark times. Well acted. Well written. I'm not saying it's a good movie. I'm just saying I liked it.
Scrooge with Alistair Sim, The Grinch who stole Christmas, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street (original), basically all the old good movies.
I love that version, too. Also highly recommend 'Scrooge, the Musical' with Albert Finney. That's a must for us on Christmas Eve every year. Also, 'The Man Who Invented Christmas' is amazing!
Jack Frost, Four Christmases, Elf, Love Actually, Harry Potter, Home Alone. My grown kids and I traditionally watch the first Harry Potter Movie on Christmas and then the rest of them all the way thru New Years.
Multiple film versions of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. My favourites are "Scrooge" with Alistair Sim, "A Christmas Carol" with Patrick Stewart and the wonderful "Muppet Christmas Carol". Shoutout for "Scrooged" too.
Here in Canada it's the usual American movies like: It's a Wonderful Life, An American Christmas Carol and A Christmas Carol. Rankin & Bass stop-action movies like: The Little Drummer Boy, Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer, T'was the Night before Christmas. I also love: Twilight Zone: Night of the Meek
Oooh but we have our own version. One guy (Knut Risan) dubs the whole thing, all the women’s voices high pitched and so on. Not a direct translation, but kind of a summary of what they say - on top of the existing dialogue in czezh and german on low volume. Airs at 12:00 at christmas eve every year.
It's a Wonderful Life. That one I have been watching for decades, and cry every time. A new one is The Christmas Chronicles with Kurt Russell as Santa, the first one. I'm a sappy American.
It's a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, Die Hard, A Christmas Story, The Santa Clause, Charlie Brown Christmas, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snowman.
This is the movie I NEVER miss. It's tradition. Mom had the 3 of us (with me & my sister) watch it every year on #Christmas Eve. I continued the tradition with my kids. Now that they are adults, my wife and I still watch it.
A Christmas Carol 1938 Black & White). Mom passed away May 2023. #Movies
I always do a LOTR extended versions marathon. My roomie who is my bestie goes home to Toronto for Christmas and I’m left to fend for myself. I’ve had some bone crushing lonely Christmas to the point honestly I’m a little traumatized by the season. I’ve made some traditions for myself.
I understand that. I lost my husband a few years ago, and my only son last year. My daughter, my grandkids and their mom have adopted new traditions because doing it the old way is just too sad. Our mantra is it’s okay to not be okay, and we support each other the best we can.
It’s been a while since I’ve watched it— will definitely add to my Christmas must-watch:
Love Actually
The Hobbit
The Lord of The Rings
Lark Rise of Candleford
Cranford
David Copperfield
Oliver Twist
The Man Who Invented Christmas
And of course Sissi— there’s no Christmas without Sissi 🤭
A Christmas Story, National Lampoons Christmas vacation, The Santa Clause, The Golden Compass, The Polar Express. Jingle all the way. Miracle on 34Th street. Its a wonderful life. E.L.F Always a great and funny movie
Sissi was Elizabeth of Austria, a princess and then Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary during the second half of the 19th century. There's a trilogy of historic/romance movies bearing her name (1955, 1956, 1957) starring a young Romy Schneider. They're often shown on TV here in Italy.
Ha! We watched every season of The Mandelorian with the grandkids when they visited last year at Christmas- bootlegging off their streaming service ( which the grinches took away from us😡)
( the streaming service, not the kids)
Correction: It is “Lark Rise to Candleford” not “of Candleford”
Lark Rise to Candleford, Cranford, David Copperfield (1999 starring Daniel Radcliffe) are British series. Sissi movie trilogy are Austrian (German speaking) movies.
No Christmas without this. Tři oříšky pro Popelku. Actually, it’s a whole culture in Czechia, Christmas time fairy tale movies. Now every year there is at least one new… making it a thick archive since ~1950’s. Top 25 here… https://www.kudyznudy.cz/aktuality/21-nejhezcich-vanocnich-pohadek
Would still put ’Love actually’ as the #1 Christmas movie in Sweden. Constantly debated among a few on media platforms, (secretely?) loved in most ordinary homes where over-analyzing entertainment isn’t a thing.
USA: The Grinch, Elf, A Christmas Story, It's a Wonderful Life.
Then my wife also watches every Hallmark Xmas movie, and there are many. many per year!!!
we do a Michelle Yeoh marathon every year…Last Christmas, EEATO, Crazy Rich Asians and then sprinkle in something different (Bond, Sunshine, Star Trek)
