A hobby produces a skill or artifact, albeit one not directly related to your profession. A recreation is an activity undertaken for pleasure that does not.

so there’s probably a way most of these can be hobbies (i parlayed an interest in watching soccer into a gig analyzing it in media), but yeah most of these are not developing “skills” per se

Obviously there’s some gray area, and one could have hobbies and recreations in the same media. So like “watching tv” is a recreation; learning to appreciate film could be a hobby.

imo fostering connections is a big part of it too. reading is recreational, book club or a less formal talking-and-sharing-about-what-you're-reading situation is a hobby. imo
