Now show us per mile of driving. I’m not giving an older driver any credit for other old people not driving. The older people who DO drive mow down a lot of pedestrians and cyclists.
And also that older people are more frail so get injured and die from collisions they’d walk away from earlier in life. Doesn’t negate all the other points though about the need to get us all out of cars with better transit, better walking way before we’re old!
Oh absolutely, and frailty is probably the main mechanism behind that rise in driver deaths. Just wanted to jump in as it felt like older drivers were getting painted as a menace to society
They are, in the UK they fully embraced car culture, have embraced larger cars as a sign of status and then refuse to acknowledge the damage they cause. Then demand we support them and put a stop to anything that doesn't align.
right, but I didn't say anything about older adults being dangerous to other people! I want them (including my dad) not to kill themselves in preventable crashes either. 😏
I don't think it should be age-based. 65 in one person may be similar to 75 in another. I think using an age threshold to start increasing frequency of testing, however, is very defensible.
I'd say more like 5, the way car designs have been changing. I'm on the record many times for saying our driver's license processes as is are total junk. They need to be way more robust for everyone from 15 until they can't pass one, whether that is age 65 or 95.
I had to listen to a bunch of fellow parents discussing which testing center was “the one that wouldn’t fail you” with no recognition that maybe being strict on a means of transportation that is the #1 cause of death of teens was a good thing
Yep. A part me dies every time I hear a parent celebrating their teen getting their license and “freedom”. Even worse when they buy them a car, thus setting them on a path of life-long crushing costs.
😬 I guess I get the issue they are likely facing re having to drive their kids around (more reasons to pursue other solutions to car centric!!) but as a parent with kids old enough to drive in a few years I can’t wrap my head around this - no way I want them on the road until they are really ready.
I mean, my kid hasn’t bothered with his license because I haven’t pushed it, I told him he had to pay for the class and do the research to get it himself. He’s also working and getting around just fine mostly on bike, sometimes on a bus. Parents just don’t see even when there are choices
