Beautiful St David’s Day weather for local football. The brilliantly named Baglan Dragons beat the almost equally brilliantly named Trethomas Bluebirds 2-0. Surprise as Bluebirds are title chasing.

Land of the free! Not.

"Campaigners say if government can find money to freeze fuel duty for motorists they can do similar for railways" - hear hear

“It took 147 years from the first signal-controlled junction in the UK until real thought was given to protecting cyclists at them.” Good read from @bricycle.bsky.social on how designing for mass cycling can help meet sustainable development goals👇

For #StDavidsDay, an old post on #Llandudno Grand Hotel exported from X... #SeasideHistory #UKCoast #SummerHolidays #HistoricHotel

Today I learned: "two of the biggest donors to Keir Starmer’s 2020 leadership campaign to replace Jeremy Corbyn were former motor industry bosses." Something to think about the next time you're threatened by an SUV owner - today, probably, if you go outside.

An excellent article on the car industry lobbying powers “These vehicles are not actually performing a practical function, they’re performing a psychosocial function for their owners. Elitism is literally the sales pitch: you can look down on other road users.” : voice.cymru/an-epidemic-...

The paper below is the kind of research that might be blocked from future TRB meetings, now that the organization is avoiding mentioning race, gender, and equity. (I say "might" because TRB has not explained its recent moves to censor and cancel studies.)

"[Self-driving cars] may actually make the climate situation worse." I agree. Consider: 🔹 Huge increase in total driving 🔹 More gridlock, leading to slower transit 🔹 AV software/hardware requires tons of energy 🔹 Inducement to live in bigger homes (w/ bigger carbon footprints) on the urban edge

This rightly notes the value of science and diversity therein. Plus historic and new threats (including climate and health). The RS "will use its voice and the expertise of our Fellows to resist the various challenges to science" sidesteps how one of their Fellows is causing much of the current harm

This is an ad for the Ahead app which, like many of its kind, is vague about who created it, what their specific expertise is, and what the content involves (until you pay for it) "Everyone who supports us financially helps us make this product better and the world calmer, kinder, and happier."

Anyone in transport should read this. Federal research is cut and will be unreliable going forward. This will affect consultants and all agencies/cities, too, as the reach of federal research spending is enormous. Or was, anyway.

Helping Powys Council out today with some research dialogue around car parking policy - always a challenge for councils.

“Inaction is a political choice, and no amount of warm words about valuing the arts or the wellbeing of future generations is a substitute for action.”

Honestly felt emotional reading these comments from parents on their role once the kids are aged 18-25 (mine are some way off that). Recommend reading this if you work in/around transport policy and your work addresses car dependence. Car attachment is rarely described with such care and empathy.

Well we all needed that at Swansea - a fine 3-0 win over Blackburn. More positive, more direct, more belief in the players from the coaches. A new beginning?

It’s the most dry ice I’ve seen since 1991. Great to see Roxette tribute band Roxette UK in Swansea this evening. Did a fine job recreating the Swedish pop rockers!

“Over the last 10 years in England, the number of killed and seriously injured (KSI) casualties has increased in the most deprived decile, whereas in the least deprived decile rates have decreased. This deprivation-injury relationship is particularly prevalent among young pedestrians and cyclists”

It’s Trefor and Simon! Come and see the postgrad crew in our @aberuni.bsky.social Psychology department - Simon for MSc behaviour change and Trefor for research degrees - live now on Aberystwyth arts centre

This brillaint piece on urban sprawl is a great insight into what I would call capitalist planning - how collaboration between powerful public and private interests helps to create irrational and crisis-prone systems that are still, in some sense, 'planned'. www.currentaffairs.org/news/in-spra...

Good to see 18th century composers getting with the Spotify vibe. No excuse for any of us oldies not to be on it now.

New #OA special issue paper by @tricyclemayor.bsky.social demonstrates how through both encounters and nonencounters with #AccessControl barriers on traffic-free routes, the city is rendered less liveable, rather than #enlivened, for many #disabled people https://buff.ly/3QiKeji

Transportation academics: I’m hearing murmurings of political interference at TRB. If you have information, please get in touch here or through other channels. Signal is @davidzipper.15

Apparently today 12 February is Dilton Marsh day….!!!!!!!!!

Jobs! @surreypsychology.bsky.social @uniofsurrey.bsky.social are looking for new social/environmental #lecturer interested in #GreenTransitions! Lecturer in Social Psychology jobs.surrey.ac.uk/007325 Lecturer in Health Psychology - jobs.surrey.ac.uk/007925

In 1st year of default 20mph limit in built-up areas casualties dropped by 28% That's 678 fewer people injured or killed A bigger drop than in Covid lockdown - more than double the reduction on such roads in any of the last 20 years Plus 20% fewer insurance damage claims and £50 fall in premiums

We need to take a step back and consider what a historical moment this could be. The US and UK research communities drove the century: splitting the atom, building the Bomb, going to the Moon, unravelling our DNA, getting the vaccine. For that to just... end? It's astonishing.

“For rural businesses to thrive and provide the jobs that local communities desperately need, we must adopt a holistic approach. First and foremost, serious investment in public transport is essential.“

Happy to announce a new academic transport journal, Journal of Transport and Sustainability, courtesy of Emerald publishing is out. Open access with fees waivered for first year. www.emeraldgrouppublishing.com/journal/jtas

Well done Greater Manchester! Now reaping the rewards of your consistent investment in 🐝 network: walking up from 52% to 57% & short car trips down from 41% to 36% in the last 5 years. Residents confirm the 🐝 network is enabling them to walk or cycle as part of daily lives. 👏

Pre-Beeching closure of this important connecting #rail line. Here on a display at long shut #Merstone station (now a cycle track and country walk). But how many cars would have been take off the roads had this and others at least been mothballed?

NEW on Wonkhe: Susan Kenyon considers who commuter students are, what they need and why the sector should care. https://buff.ly/3Efudb5

My youth team away in Clydach North of Swansea. Some great work going on to reopen walk and cycle route next to the canal. Better performance from the council there than there was by the ref in the game who unnecessarily sent 2 players off & then tried to send off someone walking through the park!!

If this is indeed the case, I cannot see the Welsh universities as a group surviving until the end of this Westminster Parliament. At least not without absolutely brutal and radical downsizing and mergers. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Some great discussion here on the dire state of funding for UK & Wales Unis. Some issues though: Home students are not a safe market. The no. of students in Wales going to uni is down 10% & the increase in student fees doesn’t cover recent National Insurance & minimum wage increases unis have to pay

Swansea falling apart this afternoon. At lot worse going on in the world at the moment but it is a pity. A. 2-0 to defeat to Coventry. First defeat v Coventry since 1981. Coventry and Swansea fans both had great songs about Captain Grimes who left Swansea for Coventry the other day.

Great evening watching some top non league football last night. Large attendance watched 1 v 2 place in Cymru South. Great atmosphere- families, friends watching. More people should go! Llanelli 1 Trethomas Bluebirds 1 - have to say fair result. But only 1 can go up. Who’ll hold their nerve?

Since the 20mph default speed limit the data shows in the first year there have been 26% fewer crashes and a 28% fall in casualties Councils need to take care about which roads revert to 30mph. This says it all: youtu.be/k2tOye9DKdQ?...
