This hollowing may be illegal (probably is), but the Ed. Dept. has not had stellar results for a long time now, but we had this awesome public education system under Eisenhower and into at least the '70's. Should have been much more inclusive, but that hasn't been going so well for a while either.

Without a federal set of standards in place, educational requirements from state to state might be VERY disparate: one state might not "believe" in evolution or unflinching history, or might place less emphasis on globally-competitive STEM, hamstringing students' futures.
