I recently finished re-reading Howl's Moving Castle and it's so cute and fun! I'm also really enjoying Circe by Madeline Miller, and before that I read Hollow by B. Catling which was a strange and spooky little fantasy, but I loved it.
it was really good!! content warning for like… pretty much everything lol, but I thought it was genuinely frightening horror with a really great cast of characters!!
Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson is my favorite book. Or if you want a series, The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini is a wonderful high fantasy with a really cool magic system.
Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold
== Shards of Honor & Barrayar
Girl meets boy on alien planet . He is known as The Butcher of Komarr. Of course she finds him irresistible. Devil is in the details.
Warriors Apprentice
The Vor Game
Cetaganda
Brothers in Arms
more...
if you havent read priory of the orange tree i HIGHLY rec it!!! strange the dreamer also bangs
if your looking for smtg a little shorter deerskin by robin mckinley is very good (do read the desc and content warnings first because it does touch on some heavy stuff)
The realm of the elderlings by Robin hobb 🙈 yes it’s a SUPER long saga (16 volumes) but they’re split into trilogies so you can stop/pause at the end of a trilogy
And i really enjoyed the folk of the air trilogy by holly black
Yup yup! You can start by the farseer trilogy (assassin’s apprentice is the first volume) You follow the bastard of a prince who’s brought to the royal court to become an assassin and is raised by a stableman and trained by the court’s assassin
I’m still going through the saga but I love it so much
Also, if you’re game for graphic novels, Unsounded is a wonderful fantasy story with some of the most fantastic characters I’ve ever read. Heavy content warnings though, most notably for gore and sexual violence
I recently read The Body Between Us and The Grave Between Us by Tal Bauer! I couldn’t put them down. Also Initiation by Alethea Faust is a good time and a complete 180 from Tal’s books.
Anything by Brandon Sanderson (Mistborn, or The Emperors Soul maybe the best places to start?), Jade City by Fonda Lee, Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, Everlost by Neal Shusterman, or Scythe by Schusterman as well
Enjoying The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams rn. It’s about the world being thrown into chaos after a beloved old king dies, starring a kitchen scullion with a wizard mentor.
i see someone already rec’d becky chambers’ books and i second that! ☝️ also if you enjoy sci-fi, the murderbot diaries by martha wells are so good (and most of them are very short too). some of my other faves: a master of djinn by p. djèlí clark, the spear cuts through water by simon jimenez-
voyage of the damned by frances white, sorcery & small magics by maiga doocy, someone you can build a nest in by john wiswell, the darkness outside us by eliot schrefer, & the gentleman bastard series by scott lynch!
Do you have a genre in mind? I‘ve been reading a lot scifi lately.
The long way to a small angry planet by Becky Chambers is amazing. About how species interact. No big space battles. Very optimistic.
Children of Time by Adrien Tchaikovsky is super fascinating, my first scifi book.
