As usual, the paper misses the age/time dimension. Arguably, the situation improves, and the fresh generations are less affected by sexism. Yet, they are simply not old/mature enough to take the top-of-the-ladder positions. I'm not saying the problem isn't there. But the analysis is lame.

I agree this info would help in interpreting the findings but note that age is associated with the faculty position rank. People at the assistant prof level are likely in their 30s-40s whereas people at the full prof levels and heads are likely much older.

The smaller imbalance at the junior faculty levels can mean, as you suggest, that it is getting better. But it can also mean that it becomes increasingly difficult for women to raise to top. The data from the past years may help and show if the situation is now better than it was.

But even if it is better than it was, the situation is far from good at present so, in my opinion, this is important to point out
