The follow-up to that book by Rhodes (one of my all-time favorites, btw) is called "Dark Sun." It's about the chunk of time post-WWII. The culmination is the development of the H-bomb, but there is a lot of lead-up before we get there, and a big part of it is how USSR got their start with A-bombs.
