There is nothing clear-eyed about that piece.
The framing of the tensions between Trump et al, and Europe as some kind of battle between strong leadership and old world, deep state bureaucracy is complete bollocks.
It's an appeal to fascism as an alternative to neo-liberalism.
Neither good options.
I didn't read the article as any sort of exoneration of Trump and whatever program he has going. But it does point towards underlying reasons for widespread disaffection with bau within the US.
I think the whole world is dissatisfied with bau.
Neo-liberalism has clearly had its day.
However, the alternative cannot be fascism.
The piece you posted frames the problem as old style deep state V new strong man leadership.
I think the alternative is 1940's 60's style democratic socialism.
Sure. Demsocs with experience in state malfeasance outside of the US don't use the term 'deep state' but nevertheless are able to recognize the intransigence of state agents when it comes to pursuing their own interests. The tendency to fascism when liberalism/capitalism is in crisis - set in stone
The post WWII years showed us what could be done
If we don't do that again (minus the racism and misogyny), yes we are headed for illiberal, authoritarian rule
Neo-liberal market based systems don't work and governments have to get back to doing their job
...Making decisions and allocating resources
We can't turn our backs on the US. If we did we wouldn't see them coming to invade us for our mineral wealth. We need to face them head on, like we have with all our international enemies in the past.
I'm constantly asking that myself. There r 8 billion people on Earth. The USA has less than 400 million. Let's make friends & trade with all the other nations on Earth. Let them be isolationist & see how far that gets them.
I fully understand and appreciate the sentiment. I'd ask that you find a way to feed the Resistance if you stay involved. There are grassroots groups across this country working night and day to plan protests, blackouts, gardens, self-defense classes, and more. We need resources. Ty for reading. πΊπ²βπΊπ¦
Yes. I feel sorry for decent Americans. I know that there are millions of you. But these are crazy times. We canβt just go along with business as usual. It doesnβt cut it anymore. Sorry. ππ€π¦
well, what exactly would we ignore? Netflix? The Marvel superhero movies? Beyonce? Maccas and Hungry Jacks? Google? Coca Cola? Can we ignore Aukus? the Five Eyes? The warzones we have deployed troops? NASA? Vogue? Unilever? American mandarins and oranges in our supermarkets? What can we ignore?
We use Linux (instead of Microsoft), use some different software apps, eat less junk food and life gets better. US is no longer dominant in most of our consumer products.
dangerous. We need to keep the channels of communication open for as long as possible to try and amend the broken situation as much as possible, no matter how painful
I watched on LBC a suggestion that UK and Europe should develope its own social media network, to provide an alternative to Facebook, Google, YouTube, and I thought WOT A BRILLIANT IDEA. Cos I hate depending on US for anything now. But it won't happen.. Why?
As much as possible donβt buy from American companies -

Probably the fastest way to get American oligarchs to stop their global fascist project. Especially if you start cutting off US commerce, tech companies in particular.
Google and Facebook arenβt even cutting edge companies anymore, theyβre just so commonly used that no questions their obsolescence.
Uncle Sam's Tourist Plantation has zero Universal Health Care, 4% of the world's population, emits 20% of the world's greenhouse gasses, incarcerates 25% of the worldβs prisoners, has 50% of the world's nukes, is 90% owned by the Kremlin and AIPAC lobbyists.
Iβd be proud to be on any or all of those shit lists. Iβll take any punishment for standing up for whatβs right in this world.
Unashamedly pro democracy, unashamedly pro human rights, unashamedly anti fascist, unashamedly anti racist.

Add a dick-tater tariff for being a knob, he loves his tariffs and would get his attention, and imagine up in front of the media when asked why the tariff, and an Australian politician says it's because he's being a dick.
It's Aussie Gold!, he's a joke make the world laugh. I have a dream
Europe, UK and other nations knew pretty much what was happening in 2017 but naively chose to sit on their hands hoping Trump would go away, he didn't and now the grim reality can't be avoided or down played any longer. Obama, the EU and Cameron didn't do enough about Putin and here we are !
As an American, there is a significant part of the population continually making bad choices due to emotional immaturity or bigotry.
But the big failure wasnβt from the US populace; it came from our establishment. Our media, courts, political parties, and business world enabled what is happening.
Biden refused to retire, despite his inability to run a second campaign. Our Attorney General Garland prized political appearances over Justice, and didnβt immediately charge ππ€‘ in 2021. Our media normalized oligarchs and ππ€‘ because it was good for business.
The Democrats are obsessed with a status quo and afraid to break it, the Republicans refuse to admit the craven feckless cowards they are. Our courts refused to admit how dangerous ππ€‘ is and favored him. US businesses were too afraid to cut off the GOP because they want tax cuts.
In short, the US did fail again on answering a trolley problem last November, but Americans were failed by the people who had the power to make sure that ππ€‘ would never be allowed near power again. The US establishment defers to money and the status quo, and they all failed the world miserably.
There's plenty of blame to go around but I still maintain that had those I mentioned done more in 2014 when Putin annexed Crimea we might not be where we are now, Trump wasn't even in politics then !
I do see your point though and agree that it's certainly why things are the way they are now !
I need to study that more. I think π€ my dad had said that I have ancestors from that area. I know my grandma had told me that we have ancestors from a German speaking part of Russia. It is my great grandmotherβs side.

Besides, turning the backs to the problems usually don't solve them.
