I would say maybe 25 years ago after the Clinton/third-way days you would have a valid argument that they were the same. Especially after Clintons work-to-welfare fiasco. After 2012/tea-party era it started to diverge. It thus became a new political reality that too many have not caught up to.

When comparing the left to the right, I always find this little formula handy:

1) What do they want to take away?
2) Who do they want to take it from?
3) Who do they want to give it to?
