They've been picking up Native Americans and Puerto Ricans, so you probably do need to know your rights. But in our neighborhood especially, so do white people. We live amongst each other here.

I think if they’d tried to hand flyers to everyone, it would’ve made perfect sense to me and felt community-oriented. That they only tried with me said a lot about their own worldview and left me feeling like I didn’t belong.

Like, I’m still thinking about this two hours later. How my non-whiteness means I will never be American. My mother used to say “American” to mean white people and I’d always be like “Mom, I’m American, too!” It took me decades to realize she had it right all along.

Thing is, my neighborhood touts itself as the most diverse in Chicago. And at every turn, we see how the divisions still exist. Even with the most liberal, the bias is there and if they don’t acknowledge it, the status quo won’t change.

Yup. I lived in Queens for years, where there was a high proportion of undocumented Irish immigrants. Nobody was scooping them up in raids.

I’ve always known that my skin tone and name set me apart as Other. Professionally, I knew my name made people toss my resume in the trash, assuming I was an unqualified immigrant. I have never thought my status here was equal. But I still called myself American. More fool me.
