Obviously Wicked looks like absolute garbage but even on principle splitting a musical into two movies is insane. Going to a musical and only getting to hear half of the songs is truly one of the most not fun things I can think of.

I saw a trailer for it in the cinema telling people to wear pink or green outfits to watch it. Trying so hard to be a forced Barbenheimer but for just half of one movie???
wait...I didn't even know they really split the musical in two. It smells like regular old Hollywood corporate greed to me, stretch out the story to elongate profits but I'm sure they (like always) will lean on the actors and artists themselves to perfunctorily fill in the "why two films?" question
i dont think it looks like its necessarily gonna be bad but yeah why is it split into 2 parts 😭 the marketing is not conveying that AT ALL i bet some people are gonna be rightfully pissed off
I have no knowledge about Wicked other than my 10 yr old loved it, but the idea of splitting a 2hr 45min musical into two movies just sounds...like capitalism. So, that tracks.
Surely the whole appeal of musicals is that they're schlocky fun with a happy ending? This musical in particular given the ways it chose to depart from the source material. Only watching half the plot defeats the largest part of the purpose.
I would counter this with: the first act of Wicked is leagues better than the second so most people would actually be much better off just watching the first movie
I disagree, I don't think it looks like a bad movie. It looks like they have done an excellent job of adapting Wicked from stage to screen from the trailers. Although it's hard to say for sure without seeing the movie. #WickedMovie
I'm team Jeff Goldblum personally, which is odd given that he's essentially the villain of Wicked as the Wizard of Oz. I just think he's fantastic in everything he is in. #WickedMovie
Honestly I was far more excited about it til I heard they were splitting it. If it was an adaptation of the book I'd be on board, but adapting the musical in this way is nonsense.
I've never read the books, but I think there is enough in the stage musical to split it into two parts to be honest. I mean, there would probably be enough for a TV Series similar to Smallville, if you dived deeper into the Oz politics. Wicked kind of reminds me of Smallville, in that #WickedMovie
There's a LOT more of that in the book, so definitely worth a shot if that's what you like! The musical only really touches on the politics, because it's a musical - at some point you have to write for the format rather than the story. Splitting the film might serve the story, but not the format.
they both feature characters who start off as good people but are inadvertently forced down a dark path because of people being judgmental, and living in fear and distrust of them (Elphaba/Lex Luthor). #WickedMovie
what's crazier is its only the first act at 2hr40mins and the entire broadway show is a 2hr45min show like DAMN its prob gonna be 2 3hour movies to adapt a show thats not even 3 hours on its own????
Most of the mistakes they've made would be nothing if they released them a few months apart - like I in July and II for the holidays, but they've implicitly accepted that II is the weaker half... and set it up to fail regardless. Lots of odd choices going on here.
I never saw the play. I was considering seeing the movie but not if it’s only half the story. Part One alone is 2’40”. Isn’t that longer than the whole play?
Also, I need subtitles with musicals nowadays. I’ll wait for the streamer.
To my knowledge the 2nd half isn't required viewing, it's the witch's perspective during the Wizard of Oz. Act 1 is basically a prequel and can work standalone
The novelty of adapting a musical into two films and donning the sequel with the subtitle 'Act II' goes hard, but not nearly hard enough to justify the years-long wait to complete the story, nor the time commitment to watching both back to back once theyre both released.
I love the musical, but I'm skipping the films on principle. Turning it into two movies is just plain old-fashioned greed. Also, I heartily dislike both the leads. I adored Ethan Slater in SpongeBob-- I saw it on Broadway 3 times, was a huge fan-- then he did what he did. Gross.
