Thats tons of room to work with. About time they got a proper transit center there. Will be important for the 235, 688,and 680 rapids. They need a center line busway here to really optimize the 235 and to make the transfer less shitty

Balboa Av is approximately 500' wider than it needs to be. Enough room for any transit we'd care to put there plus a TC, a linear park with bike trail, new housing, gondola, bier garten, and some taco/tako kiosks.

(Ok, I'm exaggerating very slightly.)

I measured the pch near middletown once, its wider than an 6 lane green boulevard in Brooklyn. One that has trees, wide bike lanes both sides. Tons of sidewalk, and 2 subway lines. Our roads can be so much better than this.

💯 Even just the southbound rightmost exit lane, which has extremely low traffic volumes is huge. Much wider than a normal lane.

My ideal solution would be
- transit center at (or very close to) Convoy & CM Blvd
- realign 235 to I-8 -> SR-163 -> Convoy after a guideway stop at the Stadium from I-15.
- El Cajon Rapid aligned to SR52 -> Convoy -> I-805
- South Bay Rapid aligned to I-805 -> Convoy -> SR-52 -> I-805

I think that the current bus setup in kerney mesa is centered on the center as of the 80s, the jobs centers of the offices by overland, convoy is now the hub but its logistically easier to have the hub where it currently is for the 120, 20, and 235, the 805 badly needs buslanes yet sandag cut them

Personally i wouldnt reroute the 235, instead run more 20 and 120 busses, and make a 20 rapid to escondido and run the 120 on convoy for that direct trip.

I'm always amazed by how many people get on and off in the middle of nowhere, but then again, I have been that person waiting for the 235 in the McDonalds off Complex many times. A real station would be appreciated

I used to like getting to North Park/City Heights via 27 -> 235 because the highway trip on a Rapid bus is so comfy, but KMTC is the most uncomfortable and depressing place for a 15 minute layover in the entire system.

Unfortunately, the funds to do this will be pulled from the funds for the Clean Transportation Advancement Campus (CTAC), the proposed new all-electric bus depot to be built likely in the Ridgeview/Fairmount/Gateway area.

MTS staff wrote a lot of words that essentially boil down to "Trump's FTA is never going to support this project." It makes sense to use capital on parts of the system that can be improved now to build resilience and maintain ridership while riding out a transit-hostile administration.

It's not great that a project that would've allowed huge capacity expansion and created both good and societally useful jobs in that part of the city is probably indefinitely deferred. Building a real KMTC also supports the effort to build Rapid bus routes when and where possible with the funding available. Two that are well into the planning stage (South Bay to UTC/Sorrento Valley via I-805; El Cajon to UCSD via SR-52) would most likely stop there.

I actually asked about a real Kearny Mesa Transit Center during the 805 Rapid info session a couple weeks ago and the MTS rep there said they were "looking into it." I have to retroactively complement his poker face since I assume they were finalizing or had finished these negotiations by then.

What I actually suggested was moving it close to or on Convoy. But a real transit center instead of "get off on the closest corner and cross this road people treat like a freeway to transfer" is very much worth doing, even if it's still in the middle of nowhere.
