upon further inspection i think all of these specifically from japan in the group are from the same photographer named Tetsurou Kobayashi. the group is called Industrial Fine Art and there's actually a bunch of photos from other countries too but the ones that float to the top are all his

HDR I think, high dynamic range, you take several shots at different exposures, and combine with software, your phone probably does it automatically in some modes. The reverse of high contrast.

I used to work in an oil refinery in Alberta and it looked JUST like these. It felt like being inside the inner workings of a giant mechanical monster. At any moment the rigging and pipes and staging would start twisting in unnatural ways as it woke up to feed.
