I don't know what "we" are or are not. I see protests in Georgia (π¬πͺ) large, mostly nonviolent & going on every day for many days. I think "we" that are opposed to trump/MAGA need to do that here. The small demonstrations are barely covered but momentum is growing. We need 3.5% to have a change.
For the level of destruction currently underway & the disregard for our constitution & separation of powers, there's not been nearly the response needed to move any needles, even if those protests seem large. Mostly the American people are on their couches complaining & not DOING anything of VALUE.
I don't think it's so much they don't want to get their hands dirty I think it is they do not know where to start. What we need is a charismatic leader to show the way
You think this has anything to do with the liberal media apparatus of the last 30+ years? Demanding temperance and decorum and Jon Stewart laughing it all off while Rush Limbaugh and Rupert Murdoch whipped everyone else into an angst fueled frenzy? Also how intentional do you think this was?
I never found Jon Stewart to be "laughing it off" but instead have found it mocking the insanity that has been normalized over this time.
TDS highlights the actual viewpoints of these radicals and sounds the alarm (while mocking them).
TDS highlights those actually standing up against it as well.
I give Jon Stewart credit for keeping me from buying the conservative bs im surrounded by as a Texan while I was a teen. But I think he may have had a damper on people doing more to actually push back. Or demanding more from the so called opposition party. He was like a pressure release valve
Their coverage of the bat shit crazy Trump "Not a State of the Union" speech last week covered it well.
They mocked the pink suits and auction signs that the Dems brought & supported the righteous anger put in action by Al Green in contrast to it.
Everyday news both sidesing bullshit is the problem
don't get mad. Get Even.. If you cannot lead , help those that can.. we need a logistics hub to help fund the those who would lead: https://substack.com/home/post/p-158556465
That said, anger-tainment is a problem we have societally. When you hit the anger button too many times you dampen or lose the ability to have anger as a buffer between passivity and rage, in my experience. That might sound nice because anger isnβt fun, but rage makes you stupid.
There have been so many "final nails in his coffin" that his coffin is made of metal at this point. He dodged prison and somehow earned immunity. We forged someone who is literally above the law. If we had 4k video of him assaulting a child, I bet his followers would send death threats to the child.
MAGA might sure. But the other 100 million people who live here who need ssi to live wonβt be as forgiving. He didnβt TSKE Medicaid and SSI last time. Thisβ¦is the redline for most people. Cultists donβt count.
I think a lot of people choose anger when they don't understand something because it makes them feel small. Our modern culture is politics obsessed, and the politicians want small people who look to them for answers, so they promote anger rather than understanding.
And because of that I've been able to start making positive changes in my life, little-by-little. But it's a skill I learned, rather than one that came naturally, and I had help in getting to a good place. But the understanding comes first: you can't fix a problem unless you diagnose it.
Take me: I'm a trans woman living in the UK. Someone tried to kill me two years ago. I was extremely angry about that. But it came from a place where I didn't feel safe, where I forgot the many more times where I wasn't in danger. I still struggle, now, but I'm not angry.
I've been saying for a while that we need to be compassionate to everyone. But mostly ourselves. I know it sounds corny, but our anger tells us something about ourselves. Heck, sometimes we can't help but act on it. But if we listen to our anger, and understand it, we don't stay angry.
The only problem is that anger tends to be destructive. It doesn't change things so much as it destroys them. Even doing something constructive angrily rarely makes the outcome constructive. Compassion, though, trying to understand things, is difficult. It takes effort to learn new things.
I think a big reason Iβm posting real good here so far is to try and get your follow, and Iβm never sure if that means I should hope for that day or dread it. But it has got me to the gym every morning at 5 so thatβs good! Just to sit on the bike and write jokes tho.
I only disagree in your last statement, because actually going to protests or public events and yelling at bad people is extremely cathartic once you get over the fear of doing it.
Wow π€―. I had not thought of it that way at all and it makes so much sense. Iβm sure there will be many more people saying this today, butβas promisedβthis might totally change my life (or, at a minimum, how I think for the rest of my life). Thank you!
It's performative anger. Putting a Ukrainian flag on your profile is easier than mildly inconveniencing yourself by cancelling your Amazon Prime. Social media is just a distracting pressure valve to make people feel like they're doing something when they're not.
Absolutely. I've been boycotting Meta, Amazon, X, TikTok, and all the companies that rolled back DEI for months. It's INFURIATING that some people aren't willing to make their lives less comfortable to help fight this.
That's 100% right. And I'll admit that I'm very guilty of this myself. I can't blame people for falling for this "entertainment-grade anger" either because it's obviously much more tempting to mash your keyboard all day.
It does put things in perspective tho. Maybe we should touch grass a bit more.
Well this perspective is eye opening. Time to begin the hard work of effecting change like the protesters we are seeing in the streets and our representatives who need to protect our interests.
As he pointed out that anger is not the issue, itβs a question of taking that anger and turning it into motivation. Too many people donβt want to βget their hands dirtyβ because that will ultimately change their lives forever. Letβs help motivate anger into action.
No, we just have a large number of people that are not properly educated enough to figure out which news sources are just catering to them, which ones have integrity to tell them the truth!
To build on this, I think we also crave consistency so much more than we realize. The unpleasant known thing is almost always preferred over the unknown, bc at least we know how it works. Itβs shitty, but itβs reliable, (even if the reliable aspect is that something is unreliable!)
I love that you're reposting your video content here! you were my favorite tik tok creator and I missed seeing your videos when I left tik tok for my mental health
Nailed it. Wait until the social security checks stop and people have to start taking care of their parents financially when they are barely making it themselves.
Agreed. Itβs terrible what these rich people are doing to us. I do believe that once they take social security there will be more than just rioting in the streets. I currently work for a senior health program. I fear for my own job currently.
I think the point was to maybe to say, wait until the people who aren't directly impacted are ALSO "inconvenienced" (I'm not saying checks stopping is only an inconvenience to recipients, to be clear). It's a multiplier effect.
No we aren't. If more people who had enough of trump were angry enough, you'd see a lot more people in protests. There would actually be a chance for a rebellion. If you think that may be a bit too much, do you really think they'll leave on their own? He is planning a third term already.
Weβre angry enough to use all of our energy being angry at the things beyond us. Of course Republicans have been angrier for far longer, but they are now also effected by the same devices β which leaves many similarly paralyzed. Those that werenβt, put us here. Itβs the irony of the internet.
However, I will also say the most consistent emotion Iβve encountered in my life since 2015 has been apathy, rather than anger. Most just never seemed to care. As Trump flouted norms, and I told them of the future weβre living in, they consistently would block me out. My anger went nowhere instead.
Essentially: maybe DO build those botnets you wanted to build; maybe DO build those social-media agents youβve scoped out; maybe DO understand how to use guns and explosives; maybe DO break out a soldering iron and actually build something; maybe DO learn to knit and to sew; maybe DO.
I just said that I'll read it. Man alive...In all seriousness though, I really enjoy your books and I enjoyed your work on Cracked. It's been too long since I've read your stuff. I love what you're doing on social media now, too. I show your videos to my Middle Schooler and we commiserate with you.
it feels like all I can do is write postcards and call my elected representatives daily and phone bank to Wisconsin and design my entire career around supporting human rights.
But what if u discovered that Walter Goggins is NOT actually your age? I'ma guess he's about 20 years older than you...(From The Always Misses the Point Dispatch)
I like what you said. During that first term I saw a lone child sitting every Friday in a town sq. She started a revolution. The kids who took their state and fossil fuel companies to court so they could have a safe environment yo grow up in.
I did my part , my house is fossil fuel free.

I'm not sure it's about 2 types of anger or emotion, there is either emotion or emotion with a plan and there largely is no plan. People accept a plan when it is clearly defined and the bespoke parts clearly benefit the individual at each step, and we largely don't have that.
The things people can clearly do and have been doing, voting and contacting their representatives, are almost seen as jokes at this point. Everything beyond that is even more nebulous.
And so.. instead of endless gratitude to the leftist activist sacrificing home and hearth, the every day liberal is angry. Angry that the coffee shop burned to the ground while the shirtless ripped warrior rallied against brown shirts. Angry at the youth atop the barricade waving freedomβs banner.
Angry that, democracy restored or triumph of fascism, this liberal, faithful voter - registered democrat - just wasnβt angry enough to act. Angry that there are heroes for faith and freedom, and our liberal just is not one of them. It is an unsettling anger, but one easily quelled.
All good points.
I think one of the reasons people are shouting online rather that going into the streets or going to meetings is that that response had been effectively crushed from 2016 to 2024.
Except thousands filled the streets for BLM protests. And, if it were true they've been effectively crushed, seems like even more reason to take to the streets for some good trouble.
Americans seem to find a myriad of "reasons", do the French or Georgians, though?
I'm not telling people don't go out and protest. I'm just adding context.
BLM protesters were beaten, blinded, arrested and sometimes worse and the result was a bipartisan endorsement of the police state from our politicians.
This resonates with me so much right now. I don't know if you're familiar with Ben Hunt but I'm going to tag him and I hope he sees this. @epsilontheory.bsky.social
Ask yourself this question: How much of this bullshit would FRANCE put up with? Those people riot in the streets and don't take any shit from their leaders. The French get results.

People in my life are not allowed to talk to me about politics unless they are doing something about politics.
it's about being arresty of russian traitors or not being arresty of russain traitors
I hope the right person steps up to fill it, or this will get ugly real fast,
... and it already isn't very pretty.

Anger is hot. It burns, then cools. It entertains by being dynamic, stimulative.
Rage is cold. It shuts down everything else.
Hatred is room temperature. Itβs static and monolithic and unchanging.
Much worse than Germans and THEY are infamous for being sheep and quiet.
. . . *shakes fist*
-That politicians are out of touch
-We're not angry enough
-that politicians are too old

The problem is unlimited corporate lobbying.

Are they going to just let this shit happen? Or are they going to DO SOMETHING?
It is our right, it is our duty, to throw-off such government.

Great analysis.
People overall are very much still enjoying their breads and circuses.

The reaction and ACTIONS of the US public have been basically 0 as far as impact goes.
People still buying trash products from trash companies that supported trump.
Meanwhile, Canadians are actually making CHANGES to their every-day lives, including canceling trips to US.

What we're seeing is more despair than anger.
