It happens very often in break away tries. You'll be running flat out and pass backwards, but through the air, your momentum pulls it forward. As long as it leaves the hands moving backwards from the passer, it's legal.

There's a couple of young blokes playing for QLD in "State of Origin" who are lightning. Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow. Whenever they are on the move the ball is going to be moving from one end to the other. Even if they ran backwards. Wish they could dribble, they'd be amazing wingers.
