I don't agree with Johnny's conclusions, but the point about the midlist is well made, and also depressing. It overlaps with the Star Trek problem - series used to have 22 episodes per season to develop characters. Most of those episodes were mid, but they established a show in people's minds.

About a quarter of a century ago I was warning everyone that the internet would destroy the midlist. Mass appeal, big money stuff would survive. Niche stuff made for peanuts would survive. But the area in-between would be hollowed out. And, lo, it came to pass.
