It is in history books I’ve read. Not in school mind you but there’s tons of fascinating reading about the US westward expansion that covers a lot of what Native American tribes were involved and where their territories were.
It was in my history books, encyclopedias and libraries. But then again, my generation was the last to actually receive an education, not an indoctrination.
Our town sits on stolen land from the Shasta, Takelma, and Latgawa peoples. Every town event starts with statements that we live on stolen lands & a tribute to Native American people past and still living in the area. We owe them so much more.
Because the colonizers erased all of that.
They set their intentions a long time ago and now they have it. 🪶💨💨💨💨💨
A fascist country built on innocent blood.
What a different society we might have grown to become if our Christian European arrogance & ownership lust was left in Europe. Our ancestors were no worse than we are today though perhaps more driven by fear answered by religious doctrine. If only …but here we are. Do the next right thing.i
It was taught in my grade school. We were taught about the indigenous people who lived in our area of western/central NY. Haudenosaunee/Iroquois nations of Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca and Tuscarora.
I JUST returned a book to my library that illustrated this also AND shows all the ancient indigenous trails AND then, highways that now follow many of those trails
I am a genealogist & early US history buff. I freaking love this kinda stuff.
Well, Russell, or is it Mark?! Why don't you edumacate us on where the ancient societies across the Americas came from. Hint: I gave you the Google search term you need to answer this.
2 years ago I read a great book, That Dark and Bloody River, by Allen Eckert. It was about the settling of the Ohio River valley. I never knew there had been so much Indian culture in OH, PA, WV, and KY.
I'll tell ya why - debilitating racism by the murderous, expansionist, colonialists, who put our Natives through genocide, and never even apologized. Disgusting.
My ex in-laws always claim to be part Cree…they had all sorts of stories, they would tell my children about they’re supposed history…turns out that they were actually Romani from Europe…they were uneducated Southerners from Georgia, so them lying about history and their heritage was not surprising
I mean it shouldn’t be but mostly because it erases so many smaller tribes and lumps them into nation state style borders that didn’t exist. The Ohlone aren’t even on there. Not even sure if I see the Miwok.
I will say when I was a kid my teachers made a good effort to talk about the people who’s land we reside on. She even made an effort to explain how the Mission system (which every california kid makes a diorama of) played a part in disenfranchising and destroying native cultures.
Some of it was. We learned about the indigenous populations in Michigan when I grew up in elementary school in the 60s. We learned about the Ottawa, Iroquois and the mound builders. Is a local awareness of early Americans not taught any longer?
7th graders get prehistory to statehood; 9th, to today. NM history - covers tons of native culture and awful topics like the Long Walk. Wrote the 9th gr curriculum myself at my school. Hope you feel better soon!
I grew up in Dakotas - at the time it was taught there, too. Don’t know about now.
School was so long ago for me I sort of remember learning some of that in the early 1970's in school in Calgary Alberta but I had a teacher from one of our First Nations near the city so maybe I just got lucky.
It's been a while but I think some of it was in my book. However, I've never stopped learning and have become more enlightened. I've discovered which native American nation resided on the land I currently occupy before the European settlers forced them off. I feel I should set it right in some way.

It's probably more realistic than reality at this point.
Thanks Ms Boone.

Maybe we can do even better.
