The "how complete" question also may vary depending on your career stage! Some editors prefer the whole thing no matter what, others will want to send some sample chapters, others will give a contract based only on vibes (/your proposal)

Absolutely! I have a caveat about this. But, for a first book, I don’t know anyone who did it without the full thing, and know some who approached editors and were asked to come back after they had finished. Lmk if that’s different than your experience and I’ll correct if so!

The rule that I've heard is no more than 30% previously published! For first time authors, it may help to have *something* published so the editor knows there is an audience

Yes I heard the same. Publication in a good journal helps. I'll add this note in a revision!

When you say 30%, do you mean of the empirical material or the whole thing? If the former, it's similar to two chapters in many cases, if the latter it is more.

30% of the whole thing! This might account for some of the theory from an article ending up in a theory chapter, etc

Right, I see! At the end it does get hard to calculate, because (in my case at least) there were some ideas here and there spread throughout the whole thing.
