The way we're already pricing in authoritarianism is very, very bad. Trump is using his power as president to openly retaliate against a law firm for representing Jack Smith and it's barely news. The signal this sends is chilling to anyone who would oppose him. What else will he do to his opponents?

Trump's Project 2025 included 18 specific anti-LGBTQ policy proposals. 10/18 have already been implemented and we're only a month into this. Really impressive (if depressing) work from the folks at the Project 2025 Tracker www.project2025.observer

Any talk you hear from the current administration about making the US more competitive in science and technology is utter bullshit. What they are doing is sabotaging our country for years if not decades to come.

Multiple reports of drivers doing spontaneous sieg heil salutes at protesters today, including in one case from someone I know personally. What is being normalized is monstrous and dangerous; every day we step closer to the abyss

This is no time to try to will normality into existence by acting normally. It is time to fight any way we can.

Individuals bear the costs of speaking out but don't capture the collective benefits for democracy. A classic externality - and one that could doom our system of government.

The whole article is interesting, but this stands out: 'Across our 62 countries, the higher benevolent #sexism, the lower was the gender equality, women’s labour participation and the more time women spend on unpaid domestic chores.'

Can’t believe I’m typing this but… FUCK IT IM PLANNING A STAND UP FOR SCIENCE PROTEST IN DC. If you want to be involved, be dm me. I’m nervous, I’ve never done this before, but we gotta be the change we want to see in the world.

That does give pause:

All these attacks on scientific research means progress towards finding treatment that can improve many chronically ill people's quality of life is slowed down.

UW-Madison estimates every $1 in revenue has +$26 ROI in economic impact, so defunding universities will wreak havoc on local, state, and national economies. Many tens of thousands will lose their jobs in US. Thousands of startups stopped. State tax revenues lost. budget.wisc.edu/budget-in-br...

The Judges Won’t Save Us: Constitutions Aren’t Self-Executing We need our civil society to fight back. open.substack.com/pub/ryandeno...

Social sciences are the scariest thing for dictatorships, that’s why we didn’t have social sciences in the Soviet Union. Seeing this unfold in real time in the US is surreal and mortifying.

Why target USAID when it’s <1% of budget? “USAID funds democracy-promotion programs around the world, including in European countries where right-wing populist movements are thriving. Musk has become an ally of those movements, some of whose leaders have specifically targeted the agency…” Gift link

The Tea Party mobilized over far less than Trump has executed in the last two weeks and was able to shift national media coverage to a focus on debt for months.

This interview with @kimlanelaw.bsky.social is absolutely essential listening for anyone who wants to understand what’s happening with American government right now

I’ve seen several posts by researchers noting that specific data is no longer available on government websites. But is there a comprehensive list of what is gone?

“But where are the opposition leaders? Where are the mass protests?” Been wondering this every day for the past week.

If you conduct research with federal data of any kind I strongly suggest you spend this weekend downloading copies of everything you use.

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.
