This is an even more serious problem with NIH funding. Limits medical research to studies of, say, prostate cancer, or for diseases that occur in women too, forces researchers to go back to the days of trialling new drugs only on men.
Historically they’ll try to rebrand science as some dangerous forbidden information and start trying to burn people caught participating in or spreading it at the stake
Well, the University of Hawai’i was told they have to remove all references to “diversity” in their public-facing literature, including the word “biodiversity.”
Unfortunately, many organizations, including NASA, are entirely or largely federally funded. Refusing to comply with federal mandates means losing funding, and losing funding means that the organization will cease to exist and the people who work there will all be without jobs.
While I agree with the sentiment in full, even benevolent organizations that take federal funding are being put in a position in which they have no choice to comply for now if they want to exist long enough to see a day when they can do the work they want to do in the way they want to do it.
I just searched for her saying this quote and can’t find a single search result besides this Bluesky post. @sonofherby where did you hear or read this? Have a link?
Federally funded agencies don’t have a choice. If they don’t comply, they don’t exist. Even benevolent orgs that are largely funded by the federal government like the one I work at are at risk of losing funding entirely if they don’t do this.
If they don’t comply with what, exactly? I get that our country is spiraling out of control right now, but what do you actually mean by “flagging” words? What does flagging the word woman mean in a practical sense? Genuinely curious.
Well, the Trump admin will look very bad if the agency says no to one thing and they completely shut them down. And at some point, one has to draw a line where accepting something immoral would change the mission too much.
I think it's likely that the admin will ask more and more extreme things.
Agree, but that would require a degree of organization that we don’t have. I am totally with you on principle, and it’s also what I want. But in practice, it’s not happening at that higher level. People are terrified to even talk to one another.
People should talk to each other.
When you feel scared of talking to each other, that's no good.
In all the professional situations I've been in, that's the one thing I've always pushed back against. When I'm told I shouldn't talk to certain people, I always rebel. I don't accept that limitation.
I am with you. But many of these orgs won’t make it to the next administration if they don’t comply and are in crisis mode. It’s horrible but it’s complicated.
It’s not to own the libs though. It’s to remove women from any meaningful role in public (or private) life and render them obedient baby farms subject to men’s rule. Seriously.
I heard that during the Gulf War, there were women soldiers who were issued driver's licenses describing them as "non-male" rather than "female" because they needed to be able to drive trucks and the countries they were in did not allow women to have driver's licenses. Same shit, different assholes.

That’s when all the real fun begins
So, you’re not wrong.
Thanks Musk. /s
Happy women in science day😭

That makes sense 🤘🏼
